Greetings! I am Mr. Matt Tolliver,  and I am a certified Professional  School Counselor at Skyview Elemetary School in Morgantown,  West Virginia. I am originally from  Buckhannon, West Virginia.  I  attended West Virginia Wesleyan  College, where I received my  Bachelor's degree in Elementary  Education.  I am also certified to  teach multisubjects in grades K-6.  I  also have my Master's degree in Counseling from West Virginia University. I am certified to counsel all age groups (PreK-Adult).  I am also currently a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of West Virginia and a Nationally Certified Counselor. I am a former West Virginia School Counselor of the Year and was a semi-finalist for the National School Counselor of the Year. This is my fourth year at Skyview Elementary School, and I am excited to continue my journey with my fellow Skyview rockets!

The vision of the Skyview Elementary School Counseling Program is to assist in developing life-long learners with a sense of intellectual, vocational and personal/social responsibility. Having achieved college and/or career success as adults, they will have the mindset of continually assessing their individual abilities and limitations, while being responsible citizens who respect the diversity of others on both a local and global scale.

School Counseling Mission Statement:
The Skyview Elementary School Counseling Program strives to provide a comprehensive and developmental school counseling program that fosters life-long learning within the academic, vocational and personal/social domains for all students and their families that focus on the whole child as well as the needs of a diverse community. Standards-based instruction and interventions are based on needs identified through the collection of process, perception and outcome data. The comprehensive program works to advocate for equitable access to vital resources for all by cultivating an environment of mutual respect that is nurturing, orderly, safe, drug-free, and violence/bully-free.

Too Good for Violence Classroom Lessons

EmilyHello there! My name is Emily, and I help Mr. Tolliver teach the students at Skyview Elementary School how to work together and solve problems! Some times the students help me out when I am having a problem with my friends. They are really good at giving me advice. We use the Too Good for Violence curriculum by the Mendez Foundation to help the kids at Skyview learn and grow!

                                                          Peer Court and Peer Mediation 


Restorative practices like mediation have proven to be a successful alternative to suspensions or punishments in schools. In many situations, punitive consequences can often make the offender resentful or even worsen behaviors. Students rarely change their behavior as a result of being punished because they need opportunities to build appropriate social skills and to learn how to resolve their conflicts peacefully.
There are three groups involved in restorative practices; the victim, the offender and the community members (in this case, a Peer Court, which consists of students trained as peer mediators who facilitate the restorative conferences). 
Restorative practices encourage the use of positive peer pressure.  Peer Court members convey dislike for the offender’s behavior in a way adults cannot. It also allows students to take a leadership role in setting school behavior expectations.
